We found a Spanish School right away and Peter and I took a two day starter course to prepare us for a weekend away in Tulate. The course was really great, for me expecially, since it covered essential travel-spanish. I was a natural because of my french (or, at least I thought so). Eureka school in Xela was a fabulous experience. Jose owns the place and he's a total nutter. He's not so much a businessman and a guy out to make enough money to keep himself in Rum. Many a night Peter and Jort joined Jose in the square for a little Quetzaltecca rum. Eureka school was actually run by Kaori, Jose's first student (and sometimes girlfriend). Kaori is from Japan, and her sense of humour is very different from ours. She had a hard time believing that Jort and Peter were not just total dumb-asses. Fernando and Willy were Jort and Peter's teachers. Fernando is an adorable young guy with a passion for music similar to Jorts... you can guess what they talked about during class. Willy is a somewhat quieter university student, who though he seems very reserved, managed to teach Peter some CHOICE phrases in Spanish.
Eureka school has several 'cultural' outings. Our first being a Merengue lesson and outing to Salsa night at the Casa Verde. Wednesday nights are big in Xela, as each week all the gringos attend Salsa night. Jort picked up the Merengue quickly... whereas my date unfortunately was hopelessly stiff on the dancefloor. Our second outing was a weekend trip to Panajachel with Willy and Jose. We had a great time in what the locals refer to as Gringotenango.
When we left Xela, the school held a small graduation ceremony for Peter and Jort. It was a momentous and emotional occasion. That night we went out on the town (again). |
